Our 24/7 Shelter for Former Street Children

From the start our objective has been to help these children have a future they can look forward to, (see the Solution) which includes resuming studies.

In October 2000, thanks to donations by Nestlé Food and many others, we opened an adaptation shelter for street children “A Step Towards Home” on 58 Chkalova str., with 3 bedrooms, a sports room, a class room and all the other necessary facilities. This shelter is staffed by Russian street educators who are trained and overseen by “Love’s Bridge” directors, and accommodates up to 20 children.

We develop long-term responses for each child whom we accept into "A Step Towards Home", which include gathering documents to register the child, supplying them with medical insurance and the needed medical attention, helping them catch up on their studies, setting them up in school and extra-curricular classes and activities, and supplying the needed distractions such as sports and excursions to keep them off of the streets. They develop personal bonds with their teachers, as well as foreign sponsors and pen pals, which helps them feel needed and loved and makes the transition from street life an easier one.

Since 2001, when the first three tiers of our project were in operation, we've had tremendous success with individual children who were considered "past hope" by government institutions that had previously cared for them. They are now studying, getting good grades, and are no longer dependant on substances or drugs.
