Family Problems
The
children we care for come from a variety of backgrounds, but almost all have
one thing in common: parental abuse or neglect, resulting from alcohol, drugs
or crime, and largely due to unemployment problems.
Their situation at home is so bad they prefer to live in sewers and basements. Most have been trampled on for years, first by their parents, and then by society at large, which sees them as a nuisance. Some have run away from orphanages or children's homes where they say the older children beat them. All of this has resulted in these children having a very hard shell, and it takes a lot of time and effort to reach past that shell, communicate with them, and gain their trust.
We also meet children whose parents are not abusive, who have simply run away from home, in which case after we've built the child's trust we try to reunite them with their family. Some children have returned home of their own volition after regularly visiting our Day Shelter for some time. Others have resumed studies and are living in our 24 / 7 Shelter. Those over 15 years old have the option to enroll in "Independent Living" classes in our ACT center.
