The ACT center is the third stage of our program, where we assist teenagers ages 15-21. The focus is helping older street children prepare for independent life, and resume education and / or find employment. Since December 3rd, 2002, six groups of teenagers (mostly former street children) have attended "Independent Living" classes in the ACT center. Before opening the ACT center our success rate with teenagers younger than 16 was very high, but both governmental efforts and our own efforts towards motivating teenagers over 16 years old to improve their lifestyle haven't met with much success. The ACT center has changed all that, as over 50% of attendees from the first year are already enrolled in education or employed.

Basic Description

The new center employs two social workers, one teacher and one psychologist. The social workers work individually with the teenagers and their parents, helping them to plan their careers. Marginalized teenagers are given the opportunity to attend a two-week course titled "Independent Living and Social Adaptation", developed by the Miramed institute, Moscow. They are also be given the opportunity to attend basic computer and English language classes. Course attendees sleep in government and private institutions for the duration of the course. ACT management negotiates with companies and educational institutions in Perm to accept these teenagers as apprentices or help them further their education, depending on the existing skills of each individual.

Some of ACT graduates

Misha (20 years old)...

...used to live in our 24 / 7 shelter. In 2002 he started living with his mother and 4 brothers again, having gotten over his addictions to substances while in our shelter, though he sometimes took to the streets for a few days. Last year he attended classes at ACT. He didn't show any immediate changes, but this year he started to change drastically. In April 2004 he was able to find employment, and now he's working at two jobs and is finally able to support himself and help his family

Zhanna (21 years old)...

...lived on the streets for a long time, sometimes in basements and sometimes in drug hang-outs. She graduated from the first ACT course in January 2003, after which she started working in a hospital with her mother. She has experienced relapses since then, but for the first time in her life she's been able to support herself and help her mother care for her younger brothers and sisters. She is also trying to help her mother pay the debts for their apartment.

Zhenya (16 years old)...

...only completed four years of school, and couldn't find employment before enrolling in the ACT course. He completed the course in October 2003. It took quite some time for him to find employment that satisfied him, but finally in May 2004 he found a job that he likes and he's been working there since.
